Commercial Technology Engineer
Description
Sumitomo Electric USA is seeking a Commercial Technology Engineer to serve as a technical expert and market-facing leader supporting our fiber optic cable solutions for hyperscale data center customers. This role bridges engineering, sales, marketing, and customer engagement by translating complex optical networking technologies into clear technical value for customers and industry stakeholders. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure and emerging network technologies with exceptional communication skills to shape market perception and customer strategy.
Technical Thought Leadership
· Develop and publish white papers, application notes, technical briefs, and other thought leadership content related to fiber optic cable solutions and data center architecture.
· Create compelling technical marketing materials that communicate product value, differentiation, and performance benefits to hyperscale customers.
· Monitor and analyze technology trends in data center infrastructure, AI/ML networking, and optical interconnects to provide actionable insights.
· Represent Sumitomo Electric USA as a technical spokesperson at industry conferences, trade shows, webinars, and customer events.
Customer Engagement and Commercial Support
· Provide technical consultation to hyperscale customers to help evaluate and implement fiber optic solutions aligned with their scalability and operational goals.
· Support customer-facing teams by participating in technical sales discussions, product positioning, and solution development.
· Conduct on-site training sessions for customers, channel partners, and internal teams on product features and installation best practices.
· Advise customers on data center fiber strategies, including network architecture, cable selection, and long-term technology roadmaps.
· Act as a trusted technical resource during customer trials, deployments, and post-sales support engagements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
· Partner with engineering, product management, sales, and marketing teams to align customer needs with product capabilities and future development priorities.
· Provide market feedback and customer insights to inform product strategy, roadmap planning, and competitive positioning.
· Support the development of technical presentations, sales tools, and customer education materials
- Support occasional matters as directed.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic cable technologies, optical connectivity, and structured cabling systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create technical documents for both technical and business audiences.
- Ability to present confidently at conferences, customer meetings, and training sessions.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for diverse stakeholders.
- Strong commercial awareness and a customer-centric approach to problem-solving.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience in a technical, commercial, product marketing, applications engineering, or solutions engineering role within fiber optics, telecommunications, or data center infrastructure.
- Proven experience supporting or selling into hyperscale data center, cloud, or large enterprise customers.
- Experience with hyperscale network architectures, optical transceivers, and high-speed interconnects is preferred.
- Experience working in a global organization or familiarity with Japanese business culture is a plus.

VII. Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed in an office environment and requires the physical and motor skills typical of an office environment, including, but not limited to: prolonged sitting, working on a computer, using telephones, handheld technology and other office equipment, standing, walking and stooping.
- May be occasionally required to lift objects such as files, boxes of paper, office supplies, and computer / office equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to routinely concentrate, focus and read for general understanding and analytical purposes and ability to communicate effectively.
